Maintaining healthy looking hair is only a matter of understanding it. Regular trims, products used and the way you care for your hair will all determine its overall appearance. For some, frequent care and maintenance is a matter of finding the time. This can be challengeing with so many other priorities.

It is often, not until we have a special place to go or a big day approaching that we realize what terrible condition our hair is in. At this point our number one wish and intent becomes having it treated styled to suit the need. Unfortunately, ill treatment or improper use of hair products can and will lead to damaged hair. Repairing damaged hair is not something that can be done overnight and will require more time and patients in order to go back to the healthy looking luster it once was. With patients and proper hair care you should not have to worry about damaging your hair.

As with most things, there are wrong and right ways of doing things that will ultimately obtain a desired or undesired end. Hair too, has special maintenance requirements that should be considered for keeping it looking its best at all times.

Here are a few simple maintenance rules that should be followed to help keep your hair in a naturally healthy looking condition.

  • Once you have shampooed your hair, use cool water to rinse it. This will help to keep your hair shiny and smooth.
  • Do not scrub the ends of your hair too much when shampooing, this can dry them out and make them brittle.
  • Snagging your hair causes damaged and split ends. Avoid this when towel drying your hair. Instead of rubbing your hair dry, scrunch it to avoid your hair getting caught in the towel.
  • Message is great for the scalp; it stimulates the blood flow to the roots of your hair. Before bed, massage your scalp for a minute or so.
  • Wear a bathing cap if you are planning to swim in chlorine or salt water.
  • Use the proper styling tools, some can be to abrasive and damage your hair.
  • When blow drying, hold the dryer at least four to six inches away from the hair to avoid the hair form getting over heated
  • Avoid using the same hair care products all the time; rotating between products will decrease the chance of build up.

Here are a few hints on things not to do.

  • Washing and rinsing your hair in hot water can be harmful to your hair. Your hair and scalp can become very dry. Warm water is the best to use on your hair.
  • When your hair is wet avoid brushing it too much. The chances of snagging or breaking the ends are more likely.
  • Be sure not to over process your hair with chemicals for coloring or perming, this could lead to damaged hair.
  • Conditioner should never be applied to the roots when your hair is dry. Conditioners can clog the pores and cause your skin to flake.
  • Avoid tying your hair to tight, French braids, twists, ponytails and clips placed in too tightly can cause hair to get break and fall out.

Hopefully these hints on maintaining your hair correctly will assist you on having great looking hair that can be managed and cared for easily on a daily basis.
